The Primacy Of Consciousness : Peter Russell

The Primacy of Consciousness is a video presentation by Peter Russel, given at the "Physics of Consciousness" conference, Virginia, 2004.

In this documentary Peter Russell explores the mystery of consciousness from both scientific and mystical perspectives, showing how light is intrinsic to both, and giving a coherent argument as to why consciousness is fundamental essence of the cosmos.

Ervin Laszlo has proposed that the virtual energy field known as the quantum vacuum, or zero-point field, corresponds to what Indian teachings have called Akasha. the source of everything that exists, and in which the memory of the cosmos is encoded. I would like to take his reasoning a step further and suggest that the nature of this ultimate source is consciousness itself, nothing more and nothing less.

Again we find this idea is not new. In the Upanishads, Brahman, the source of the cosmos (literally, "that from which everything grows"), is held to be to Atman ("that which shines"), the essence of consciousness. And in the opening lines of The Dhammapada, the Buddha declares that "All phenomena are preceded by mind, made by mind, and ruled by mind".

Such a view, though widespread in many metaphysical systems, is completely foreign to the current scientific worldview. The world we see is so obviously material in nature; any suggestion that it might have more in common with mind is quickly rejected as having "no basis in reality". However, when we consider this alternative worldview more closely, it turns out that it is not in conflict with any of the findings of modern science—only with its presuppositions. Furthermore, it leads to a picture of the cosmos that is even more enchanted.

All in the Mind

The key to this alternative view is the fact that all our experiences—all our perceptions, sensations, dreams, thoughts and feelings—are forms appearing in consciousness. It doesn't always seem that way. When I see a tree it seems as if I am seeing the tree directly. But science tells us something completely different is happening. Light entering the eye triggers chemical reactions in the retina, these produce electro-chemical impulses which travel along nerve fibers to the brain. The brain analyses the data it receives, and then creates its own picture of what is out there. I then have the experience of seeing a tree. But what I am actually experiencing is not the tree itself, only the image that appears in the mind. This is true of everything I experience. Everything we know, perceive, and imagine, every color, sound, sensation, every thought and every feeling, is a form appearing in the mind. It is all an in-forming of consciousness.

The idea that we never experience the physical world directly has intrigued many philosophers. Most notable was the eighteenth-century German philosopher Immanual Kant, who drew a clear distinction between the form appearing in the mind—what he called the phenomenon (a Greek word meaning "that which appears to be")—and the world that gives rise to this perception, which he called the noumenon (meaning “that which is apprehended"). All we know, Kant insisted, is the phenomenon. The noumenon, the “thing-in-itself,” remains forever beyond our knowing.

Unlike some of his predecessors, Kant was not suggesting that this reality is the only reality. Irish theologian Bishop Berkeley had likewise argued that we know only our perceptions. He then concluded that nothing exists apart from our perceptions, which forced him into the difficult position of having to explain what happened to the world when no one was perceiving it. Kant held that there is an underlying reality, but we never know it directly. All we can ever know of it is the form that appears in the mind—our mental model of what is "out there".

It is sometimes said that our model of reality is an illusion, but that is misleading. It may all be an appearance in the mind, but it is nonetheless real—the only reality we ever know. The illusion comes when we confuse the reality we experience with the physical reality, the thing-in-itself. The Vedantic philosophers of ancient India spoke of this confusion as maya. Often translated as “illusion” (a false perception of the world), maya is better interpreted as “delusion” (a false belief about the world). We suffer a delusion when we believe the images in our minds are the external world. We deceive ourselves when we think that the tree we see is the tree itself.

The tree itself is a physical object, constructed from physical matter—molecules, atoms, sub-atomic particles. But from what is the image in the mind constructed? Clearly it is not constructed from physical matter. A perceptual image is composed of the same "stuff" as our dreams, thoughts, and feelings, and we would not say that these are created from physical atoms or molecules. (There might or might not be a corresponding physical activity in the brain, but what I am concerned with here is the substance of the image itself.) So what is the mental substance from which all our experiences are formed?

The English language does not have a good word for this mental essence. In Sanskrit, the word chitta, often translated as consciousness, carries the meaning of mental substance, and is sometimes translated as "mindstuff". It is that which takes on the mental forms of images, sounds, sensations, thoughts, and feelings. They are made of "mindstuff" rather than "matterstuff".

Mindstuff, or chitta, has the potential to take on the form of every possible experience—everything that I, or anyone else, could possibly experience in life; every experience of every being, on this planet, or any other sentient being, anywhere in the cosmos. In this respect consciousness has infinite potential. In the words of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, "Consciousness is the field of all possibilities".

This aspect of consciousness can be likened to the light from a film projector. The projector shines light onto a screen, modifying the light so as to produce one of an infinity of possible images. These images are like the perceptions, sensations, dreams, memories, thoughts, and feelings that we experience—the forms arising in consciousness. The light itself, without which no images would be possible, corresponds to this ability of consciousness to take on form.

We know all the images on a movie screen are composed of light, but we are not usually aware of the light itself; our attention is caught up in the images that appear and the stories they tell. In much the same way, we know we are conscious, but we are usually aware only of the many different perceptions, thoughts, and feelings that appear in the mind. We are seldom aware of consciousness itself.

All phenomena are projections in the mind.

—The Third Karmapa

No Matter ?

Although we may not know the external world directly, we can draw conclusions from our experience as to what it might be like. This, in essence, has been the focus of our scientific endeavors. Scientists have sought to understand the functioning of the world around us, and draw conclusions about its true nature.

To the surprise of many, the world "out there" has turned out to be quite unlike our experience of it. Consider our experience of the color green. In the physical world there is light of a certain frequency, but the light itself is not green. Nor are the electrical impulses that are transmitted from the eye to the brain. No color exists there. The green we see is a quality appearing in the mind in response to this frequency of light. It exists only as a subjective experience in the mind.

The same is true of sound. I hear the music of a violin, but the sound I hear is a quality appearing in the mind. There is no sound as such in the external world, just vibrating air molecules. The smell of a rose does not exist without an experiencing mind, just molecules of a certain shape.

The same is also true of the solidness we experience in matter. Our experience of the world is certainly one of solidness, so we assume that the "thing in itself" must be equally solid. For two thousand years it was believed that atoms were tiny solid balls—a model clearly drawn from everyday experience. Then, as physicists discovered that atoms were composed of more elementary, subatomic particles (electrons, protons, neutrons, and suchlike) the model shifted to one of a central nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons—again, a model based on experience.

An atom may be small, a mere billionth of an inch across, but subatomic particles are a hundred thousand times smaller still. Imagine the nucleus of an atom magnified to the size of a golf ball. The whole atom would then be the size of a football stadium, and the electrons would be like peas flying round the stands. As the early twentieth-century British physicist Sir Arthur Eddington put it, “Matter is mostly ghostly empty space.” To be more precise, it is 99.9999999% empty space.

With the development of quantum theory, physicists have found that even subatomic particles are far from solid. In fact, they are nothing like matter as we know it. They cannot be pinned down and measured precisely. Much of the time they seem more like waves than particles. They are like fuzzy clouds of potential existence, with no definite location. Whatever matter is, it has little, if any, substance.

Our notion of matter as a solid substance is, like the color green, a quality appearing in consciousness. It is a model of what is "out there", but as with almost every other model, quite unlike what is actually out there.

Even the notion of mass is questionable. In his General Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein showed that mass and acceleration are indistinguishable. A person in an elevator feels lighter when the elevator accelerates downwards, and heavier when it decelerates to a halt. This is no illusion, scales would also show your weight to have changed. What we experience as mass is the resistance of the ground beneath our feet to our otherwise free fall towards the center of the Earth. According to Einstein, we are being continually decelerated, and interpret that as mass. An astronaut in orbit experiences no mass—until, that is, he bumps into the wall of the spacecraft and experiences a temporary deceleration.

Whatever matter is, it is not made of matter.

—Prof. Hans-Peter Dürr

Spacetime and Action

Einstein's work also revealed that space and time are not absolutes. They vary according to the motion of the observer. If you are moving rapidly past me, and we both measure the distance and time between two events—a car traveling from one end of a street to another, say—then you will observe the car to have traveled less distance in less time than I observe. Conversely, from your point of view, I am moving rapidly past you, and in your frame of reference I will observe less space and time than you do. Weird? Yes. And almost impossible for us to conceive of. Yet numerous experiments have shown it to be true. It is our common sense notions of space and time that are wrong. Once again they are constructs in the mind, and do not perfectly model what is out there.

Kant foresaw this a hundred years before Einstein. He concluded that space and time are the dimensional framework in which the mind constructs its experience. They are built into the perceiving process, and we cannot but think in terms of space and time. But they are not aspects of the objective reality. That reality, according to Einstein, is something else, what he called "spacetime". When observed, spacetime appears as a certain amount of space and a certain amount of time. But how much is perceived as space and how much is perceived as time is not fixed; they depend upon the motion of the observer.

If space, time, and matter have no absolute objective status, what about energy? Physicists have a hard time saying exactly what energy is. It is defined as the potential to do work, that is, to create change. Energy comes in many different forms: potential energy, kinetic energy, chemical energy, electrical energy, heat energy, radiation energy. But we never measure energy as such, only the changes that we attribute to energy.

Energy if often said to be a fundamental quality of the cosmos. But that too turns out to be a mistake. According the Special Theory of Relativity, energy and mass are interchangeable, related by Einstein's famous equation, E=mc2. Observers traveling at different speeds will differ in their measurements of how much energy an object has.

Quantum theory offers further clues as to the nature of energy. The quantum is commonly called a quantum of energy, the smallest possible unit of energy. But that is not strictly correct. The quantum is actually a quantum of action.

What is action? It is another physical quantity like distance, velocity, momentum, force, and others that we meet in physics, but it is not usually given much attention in our basic math or physics

The amount of action in a quantum is exceedingly small, about 0.00000000000000000000000000662618 erg.secs (or 6.62618 x 10 erg.secs in mathematical shorthand)—but it is always exactly the same amount. It as one of the few absolutes in existence, and more fundamental than space, time, matter, or energy. The Zero-Point Field is not therefore a potential energy field—despite the fact it is often referred to as such. It is a potential quantum field, a field of potential action.

A photon is a single quantum of light, but the energy associated with a photon varies enormously. A gamma-ray photon, for example, packs trillions of times more energy than a radio-wave photon. But each and every photon, each and every quantum, is an identical unit of action.

When the photon is absorbed—by the retina of the eye, say—it manifests as a certain amount of energy, measured by the amount of change it is capable of creating. This change is what is conveyed to the brain and then interpreted as color. The amount of change, or energy, is dependent upon the frequency, which is why we say different colors correspond to different frequencies of light.

What is frequency? Again it is another model taken from experience and then imagined to apply to the photon. It is most unlikely that a photon has frequency as we think of it. Indeed, even the idea of a photon is another example of how we have projected our experience on to the external world. We experience particles so imagine light might be a particle. We also have the experience of waves, so imagine light as a wave. Sometimes light seems to fit one description, other times another. It is much more likely that light is neither wave nor particle. For reasons of space, I will not go into the details of the argument here, but the interested reader can find more in my book From Science to God.

To summarize the argument so far: Our whole experience is a construction in the mind, a form appearing in consciousness. These mental forms are composed not of physical substance but of"mindstuff". We imagine that the world out there is like the forms that appear in consciousness, but it turns out, that in nearly every aspect, the external is not at all like the images created in the mind. What appear to us as fundamental dimensions and attributes of the physical world—space, time, matter and energy—are but the fundamental dimensions and attributes of the forms appearing in consciousness.

Matter is derived from mind, not mind from matter.

—The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation

Two Aspects or One ?

In Chapter Four, Ervin introduces panpsychism: the hypothesis that consciousness is not unique to human beings, or higher animals, or even creatures with nervous systems. It is in everything. As he is at pains to point out, this is not to imply that simpler systems have thoughts or feelings, or any of the other mental functions that we associate with consciousness, only that the capacity for consciousness is there in some form, however faint. Even a lowly bacterium has a glimmer of the inner light, maybe a billionth of the inner light we know, but not nothing at all.

The current scientific paradigm assumes the exact opposite—that matter itself is completely insentient, it is completely devoid of the capacity for experience. Consciousness only comes into existence with the evolution of complex nervous systems. The problem with this view—David Chalmers', "hard problem"—is explaining how conscious experience could ever emerge from insentient matter. Why doesn't all that neural processing go on "in the dark?"

Ervin argues that the only tenable answer, anathema as it may be to the current scientific worldview, is that the capacity for inner experience does not suddenly appear, as if by magic, once a particular level of complexity has arisen. The potential for inner experience has been there all along.

Panpsychism is usually taken to imply that there are dual aspects to everything. There is the physical aspect, that which we can observe from the outside, and there is a mental aspect, the experiences known from the inside. For a long time I went along with this dual aspect view. But recently I have begun to question it. I have not questioned whether or not there is a mental aspect, which is the question that most people raise. I have come to question whether there is, after all, a physical aspect. I realize this is radical to many, but let me briefly go over the reasons behind this suggestion and the implications.

Every time we try to pin down the physical aspect we come away empty-handed. Every idea we have had of the physical has proven to be wrong, and the notion of materiality seems to be evaporating before our eyes. But our belief in the material world is so deeply engrained—and so powerfully reinforced by our experience—that we cling to our assumption that there must be some physical essence. Like the medieval astronomers who never questioned their assumption that the Earth was the center of the universe, we never question our assumption that the external world is physical in nature. Indeed it was quite startling to me when I realized that the answer might be staring us straight in the face. Maybe there really is nothing there. No "thing" that is. No physical aspect. Maybe there is only a mental aspect to everything.

We would then have to think of the Akashic Field as a field that is entirely mental in nature. Its essence is the essence of mind. It's hard to imagine, I know. In fact all we can imagine are the forms arising in our minds. We cannot imagine consciousness itself. It is the imaginer, that in which images arise. It is probably best not even to try to imagine what a mental field is like, for we would surely be as wrong as when we try to imagine quanta, or spacetime.

All we can say about it is that it is not a uniform field. It must contain distinctions of some kind, for it is these variations that are the origin of our perception of the world. If there were no variations in the field, there would be nothing to observe, nothing to experience.

These variations in the field are the "objects" of our perception. But they are not objects in the sense of a material object. They only become material objects in the mind of the observer. There then appears to be a material "thing" out there. We then assume that the physicality we experience, which seems so intrinsic to the world we know, must also be an intrinsic aspect of the external world.

Even though there may be no physical basis to the external world, the laws of physics still hold true. The only thing that changes is our assumption of what we are measuring. We are not measuring physical particles or such, but perturbations in the Akashic mind-field. The laws of "physics" become the laws governing the unfolding of a mental field, reflections of how perturbations in this field interact.

What we call an elementary particle would correspond to an elementary variation in the field. We might better call it an elementary entity rather than particle. Elementary entities are organized into atoms, molecules, cells and suchlike, just as in the current paradigm. The difference is that we no longer have to think of consciousness sensing matter (with all the difficulties that involves of how the physical influences the mental), consciousness is now sensing consciousness directly.

Interaction might now be thought of as perception—the perception of one region in the mind-field by another. In the current view every interaction is mediated by a quantum of action (an inter-action). In this alternative view, the smallest item would be a unit of perception, a unit of experience. It would be a quantum of consciousness, a quantum of chitta.

In the physical world of our experience we have discovered action to be a fundamental quality. In this alternative view, that still is true. Consciousness acts as it takes form. A quantum of action is a quantum of experience, a quantum of chitta.

We can now begin to understand why the material world appears to be devoid of consciousness. The qualities that appear in the mind—the color, sound, smell, substance, or whatever—become objects of perception, "the material world". But there is no sign of consciousness itself in the images of matter that appear in the mind. Just as when we watch a movie, the picture on the screen may be composed of light, but there is no evidence in the unfolding story that this is the case. The forms that arise in the mind give no hint in themselves that they are all manifestations of mindstuff. They appear to be other than consciousness. And so we assume that the stuff of the world "out there"—the matterstuff—is insentient.

Physics is the study of the structure of consciousness.
The "stuff" of the world is mindstuff.

—Sir Arthur Eddington

The Hard Question Revisited

The hard question of how insentient matter could ever give rise to conscious experience is now turned inside-out. There is no insentient matter—apart from that appearing in the mind. The question now becomes: How does mind take on all these qualities that we experience, including that of matter?

That question is best answered by direct awareness; by turning the light of consciousness in upon itself, and observing the nature of mind first-hand. Those who have chosen this path are the great mystics, yogis, seers, saints, rishis, and roshis who are found dotted throughout human history.

Despite the differences in time and culture, they have come to remarkably similar conclusions. These conclusions do not, however, make much sense to the contemporary Western mind. In most cases they seem to be so a odds with the current scientific worldview that they are rejected out of hand—and with them any credibility there may be for spirituality in general.

Consider, for instance, the statement by Baba Muktananda that "You are the entire universe. You are in all, and all is in you. Sun, moon, and stars revolve within you." Most people would be puzzled, if not confused. It clearly goes against the contemporary worldview in which I am a small point at the center of my universe, around which everything else revolves. Muktananda appears to be saying the exact opposite. Possibly, we might surmise, a mind deranged by too much meditation.

However, if we see it in terms of an intimate personal acquaintance with the arising of mental phenomena, and hence of our whole world, it makes much more sense. Every experience, every thing we ever know, is taking place within us.

Likewise, when we read such peoples' accounts of creation, we are likely to interpret them in terms of how the physical world was created. In a sense they are. But they are talking of the physical world as it appears in the mind—how that is being continually created.

The Ashtavakra Gita, a highly venerated Indian text, says: "The Universe produced phenomenally in me, is pervaded by me. . . From me the world is born, in me it exists, in me it dissolves." Hardly comprehensible, until we consider it from the point of view of consciousness.

"In the beginning was Logos." Often translated as "The Word", logos also means "thought, or essence." In the beginning was the mental essence, chitta.

"Be still and know that I am God" is not necessarily an injunction to stop moving around and recognize that the person speaking is the creator of the entire cosmos; it is much more likely an encouragement to still the mind—in the words of the great yogi Patanjali, "let the manifesting of chitta die down"—and discover through direct knowing, that "I", that ever-present, never-changing, innermost essence of your own mind, is the essence of everything.

It is in this that I find a personal re-enchantment of the cosmos. If our own essence is divine, and the essence of consciousness is to be found in everything, everywhere, then everything is divine. Panpsychism becomes pantheism. It doesn't matter whether we call it Universal Mind, Allah, God, Jehovah, the Great Spirit, or the Quantum Vacuum Field, we are all of that same essence.

This raises my level of awe for the world in which I live, or seem to live. When I consider that—despite all appearances to the contrary—this world is, in the final analysis, of the same essence as my own being, I am filled with wonder. Every thing is enchanted anew.

Fred Alan Wolf : The Yoga Of Time Travel

Fred Alan Wolf is the author of "The Yoga of Time Travel" and is well known in the scientific community for his brilliant work in the field of quantum physics exploring possibilities of Time Travel through Yoga and consciousness exploration ... In this program he shows how time is a flexible projection of the mind and why some physicists are now taking time travel seriously.

Fred Alan Wolf is well known for his simplification of the new physics and is perhaps best known as the author of Taking the Quantum Leap which, in 1982, was the recipient of the prestigious National Book Award for Science.

Former professor of physics at San Diego State University for twelve years, Dr. Wolf lectures, researches, and teaches worldwide. Dr. Wolf has also appeared as the resident physicist on The Discovery Channel's The Know Zone and on many radio talkshows and television shows across the United States and abroad.

The Theosophical Society in America is a branch of a world fellowship and membership organization dedicated to promoting the unity of humanity and encouraging the study of religion, philosophy and science so that we may better understand ourselves and our relationships within this multidimensional universe.

An excerpt from 'The Yoga Of Time Travel' ...

Yoga practitioners have known about time travel since ancient times, and many still practice it today. Yoga is a system of practice that is a part art, part philosophy, and part science. It is a hands-on method for enobling one's life, finding purpose in it, and going beyond the everyday illusions that inundate us all. According to traditional Indian philosophy, the yoga system is divided into two principal parts, Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga with many minor divisions within each. Hatha Yoga deals principally with physiology, with a view to establishing health and training the mind and body.

Raja Yoga is a means to control the mind itself by following a rigorous method laid down by adepts long ago. The word Yoga shows up in several contexts in Hindu thought and has a number of meanings. Yoga is the name of one of the six original systems of Hindu philosophy, which provides the philosophical basis for Yoga as presented by the ancient sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. In the Sutras, Patanjali sets forth ashtanga
yoga (literally, the eight-limbed practice), which is now generally referred to as Raja Yoga. Again, the most famous Hindu text, the Bhagwad Gita, talks about Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Jnana Yoga, three pathways for attaining enlightenment. The Gita also speaks of kriya yoga, as do the Yoga Sutras. When you compare them, you find they complement each other, leading adepts to say that hatha is kriya is raja.

Yoga as both a practice and a system implies a concept of time summed up in the Sanskrit word Samsara. Samsara signifies conditioned existence, boundedness, the yoking of spirit to spatial and temporal confinement. As Georg Feuerstein, a noted scholar and teacher of yoga philosophy, points out, "Above all ... Samasara is time." Feuerstein explains that the literal meaning of Samsara is flowing together, a perpetual flux of things and events producing consequences of causal relationships.

Many ancient hymns tell us that time - the past, present and the future - is the progenitor of the cosmos and that time itself is the child of consciousness.

Time Travel Parallel Universes Stargates 2012

Time Travel has always captured the imagination of many scientists, writers, poets, mystics and philosophers all across the world and today with major breakthroughs in Quantum Physics and the big bang experiments in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Time Travel is now becoming more real than ever imagined before ... Scientists have already verified that it is now possible for particles from other dimensions / parallel universes to enter ours through the wormholes created at CERN ... This is where science fiction transforms into infinite possibilities based on scientific fact making virtually anything possible in our holographic universe where it is all here & now !

Surprising as it may be to most non-scientists and even to some scientists, Albert Einstein concluded in his later years that the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously. In 1952, in his book Relativity, in discussing Minkowski's Space World interpretation of his theory of relativity, Einstein writes:

Since there exists in this four dimensional structure [space-time] no longer any sections which represent "now" objectively, the concepts of happening and becoming are indeed not completely suspended, but yet complicated. It appears therefore more natural to think of physical reality as a four dimensional existence, instead of, as hitherto, the evolution of a three dimensional existence.

Einstein's belief in an undivided solid reality was clear to him, so much so that he completely rejected the separation we experience as the moment of now. He believed there is no true division between past and future, there is rather a single existence. His most descriptive testimony to this faith came when his lifelong friend Besso died. Einstein wrote a letter to Besso's family, saying that although Besso had preceded him in death it was of no consequence, "... for we physicists believe the separation between past, present, and future is only an illusion, although a convincing one."

Jenny Randles' new book 'TIME TRAVEL: Fact, Fiction and Possibility' extends a fascinating look at the concept of time travel, and the possibilities that it may actually be happening.

Randles presents many of the theories on the subject, a nifty one — whatever its validity — being that what we experience as UFO aliens are actually time travellers from various parts of the future. This would certainly explain why the beings show an interest in humanity. Another wonderful speculation concerns the real reason for the sinking of the Titanic being as deadly as it was. It seems that the ship's weight was supplemented by the presence of all those voyeuristic time travellers who wanted to experience the last few minutes of the famous ship's existence. "They were not recorded in any log-book," she writes. "They could not be added to calculations about depth of passage below the water line. And none of them hung about when the ship started to go down."

The book is full of anecdotes about people who have experienced what seemed to be time strangenesses. These include those who heard sounds from years past, and those who encountered alleged Brigadoon-like disappearing communities. Interestingly, some have thought the latter might mask unearthly abduction scenarios. Other fascinating items include cars and dogs which disappeared into and often reappeared from cloudy vortexes, Lindsay Wagner's physical premonition of an aircraft disaster, Randles' own premonitory dream of the space shuttle Challenger disaster, the allegedly time-bending Philadelphia experiment, human figures who only showed up in photographs, and anachronistically early human-related fossils which could be evidence of time-travellers.

One way to look for such people, Randles suggests, is to search through photos of crowds around major disasters and try to find the same faces in various eras. "Such evidence may not exist at all or may be very hard to find even if it does. But how will we know unless we try?" One could also look for reports of UFOs around these times and places.

Even now, there are people who have actually claimed the ability to travel through time. Randles examines these as well. But the book's range is not limited to the purportedly factual; fictional time travel in books and movies is also covered, from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court to Somewhere in Time.

In the movies, one favorite technique is to construct a time machine. Other ways of getting about include mere willpower, and a wide variety of other methods. But the "non-fictional" ideas are the book's strength. To offer just one example, she suggests a way that you might pick up future images by setting up your VCR.

While this sounds less convincing than some of the ideas presented herein, it does show the book's best feature, that Randles is willing to consider many options and doesn't shut out avenues of inquiry that are potentially rewarding.

An excerpt from the introduction to 'The Yoga Of Time Travel' by Fred Alan Wolf ...

"I don't understand you," said Alice. "It's dreadfully confusing!"

"That's the effect of living backwards," the Queen said kindly: "it always makes one a little giddy at first - "

"Living backwards!" Alice repeated in great astonishment. "I never heard of such a thing!"

"-but there's one great advantage in it, that one's memory works both ways."

"Im sure mine only works one way," Alice remarked. "I can't remember things before they happen."

It's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards," the Queen remarked.

- Lewis Carroll, Through The Looking Glass

Most of us assume, as Alice does, that whatever we can remember has already taken place. If asked why we don't remember scenes from our future, we might answer: "Because, dummy, they haven't happened yet!" But as the Queen in Lewis Carroll's delightful book suggests, perhaps we do have memories of the future, however nonsensical that may sound. Consider the albeit radical possibility that the Queen is right: memory does work both ways.

The Spiritual Dimensions Of Time Travel by Fred Alan Wolf

That is, you are perfectly able to remember the future as well as you can recall the past. Further, consider that having a two-way memory could lead, as the Queen suggests, to distinct advantages. For example, it might help you deal with synchronicities and experiences of deja vu, avoid health problems, make significant predictions about your life, and offer many other benefits, as may become clear as this book unfolds ....

Oneness : Transcending The Illusion Of Duality

The philosophy of Nonduality, or as it is called in India, Advaita-Vedanta, says that there is just One Spirit in the Universe, and that everything, living or inanimate, is an inseparable and indivisible part of this One Spirit. Nonduality further says that it is only illusion, caused by the mind and the play of the senses, which make us regard the world and everything in it, as real and separate from us.

For someone not familiar with this philosophy, it might sound strange and even weird, but once understood, it can completely change one's attitude and perspective about life.

Imagine a state, in which you feel oneness with the Universe, enjoying bliss and peace of mind, and at the same time acting and functioning normally in your day-to-day life. A state of being active in the world, yet maintaining a state of inner detachment. In this state you are aware of your oneness with the One Spirit, and also aware that the One Spirit is acting and manifesting through everything, things, plants, trees, animals and people. This is the experience of nonduality in its highest condition.

Ordinarily, the veil of thoughts and the five senses draw the mind outside, to the external world, and obscure the awareness of the consciousness that is beyond the mind. Meditation brings peace to the mind, and develops the ability to silence it, thus enabling us to experience the "state" of nonduality. In this state of inner silence, one rises above the illusion of identification with the mind, thoughts and ego, gets beyond the illusion of separateness, and realizes the oneness with the One Spirit. It is as if a new sort of consciousness dawns, and one sees the world in a different way.

With this kind of consciousness, we are able to allow the mind to be active or command it to be silent at our command. It becomes our faithful servant, instead of being our master. We function very effectively in the outer world, yet our basis is in pure, calm and limitless consciousness, which is not attached to anything and not limited by anything. In this state, we live and view the world from the nonduality point of view.

Though in our day-today life we refer to other people, as separate from us, this is only a mental viewpoint, convenient for functioning in our daily lives. From a higher state of consciousness, all are One, and the terms "I", "you", "he", "she" and "they" are not real. There is only the One Spirit, Consciousness, which seems to manifest in limitless forms and ways.

The concept of nonduality is not a strange or weird idea. It can be experienced and lived right here and now, no matter where you are, and without attracting anybody's attention. It is an inner state of consciousness, not an external state.

It is possible to realize the meaning of nonduality and attain spiritual awakening and enlightenment in an ashram or a cave, and it is also equally possible to do so while living in a town or city with family and job. It is all a matter of strong desire, inner attitude and dedication.

Most people cannot afford to live a secluded life in order to meditate and lead a purely spiritual life. Most of us need to work and support a family, and can therefore devote only part of the day to spiritual pursuits. The good news is that we can practice meditation and realize our true being, without abandoning our present style of living. With proper planning, it is possible to find the time and the energy.

Meditation, walking on the spiritual path and the realization of nonduality can be practiced anywhere, without making external changes in our life. You can stay with your job and family, and still make spiritual progress and realize the true meaning of nonduality.

There are many shades of meaning to the word nonduality. As an introduction, we might say that nonduality is the philosophical, spiritual, and scientific understanding of non-separation and fundamental oneness.

Our starting point is the statement “we are all one,” and this is meant not in some abstract sense but at the deepest level of existence. Duality, or separation between the observer and the observed, is an illusion that the Eastern mystics have long recognized and Western science has more recently come to understand through quantum mechanics.

Dualities are usually seen in terms of opposites: Mind/Matter, Self/Other, Conscious/Unconscious, Illusion/Reality, Quantum/Classical, Wave/Particle, Spiritual/Material, Beginning/End, Male/Female, Living/Dead and Good/Evil. Nonduality is the understanding that identification with common dualisms avoids recognition of a deeper reality.

So how can we better understand nonduality?

There are two aspects to this question, and at first glance they appear to be mutually exclusive, although they may be considered two representations of a single underlying reality.

The first aspect is our understanding of external reality, and for this we turn to science. The word science comes from the Latin scientia, which means knowledge. The beauty and usefulness of science is that it seeks to measure and describe reality without personal, religious, or cultural bias. For something to be considered scientifically proven, it has to pass exhaustive scrutiny, and even then is always subject to future revision. Inevitably human biases creep in, but the pursuit of science itself is intrinsically an evolving quest for truth. But then quantum mechanics turned much of this lauded objectivity on its head, as the role of the observer became inseparable from the observed quantum effect. It is as if consciousness itself plays a role in creating reality. Indeed, the two may be the same thing. As quantum pioneer Niels Bohr once put it: “A physicist is just an atom's way of looking at itself!”

The second aspect is our inner, personal experience of consciousness, our “awareness of awareness.” We have our senses to perceive the world, but “behind” all perception, memory, identification and thought is simply pure awareness itself. Eastern mystics have described this undifferentiated consciousness for thousands of years as being the ultimate state of bliss, or nirvana. Seekers have attempted to experience it for themselves through countless rituals and practices, although the state itself can be quite simply described. As Indian advaita teacher Nisargadatta Maharaj said: “The trinity: mind, self and spirit, when looked into, becomes unity.”

The central challenge to understanding nonduality may be that it exists beyond language, because once it has been named, by definition -- and paradoxically -- a duality has been created. Even the statement “all things are one” creates a distinction between “one” and “not-one”! Hardly any wonder that nonduality has been misunderstood, particularly in the West.

Harmonic Convergence 2012 And Beyond !

The period in history known as Harmonic Convergence was defined by Jose Arguelles as: “the point at which the counter-spin of history finally comes to a momentary halt, and the still imperceptible spin of post-history commences.” It was the fulfillment of the prophecy of Quetzalcoatl, known as the Thirteen Heavens and Nine Hells.

The prophecy stated that following the ninth hell, humanity would know and experience an unprecedented New Age of Peace. The Hell cycle ended on August 16, 1987; the Harmonic Convergence began on August 17. Thus began the projected twenty-five year culmination of the 5,125 year Great Cycle of History, as well as the 26,000-year cycle of evolution, both slated to end in 2012.

The Harmonic Convergence was an announcement of the forthcoming end of time as we know it and a preparation to move from third-dimensional reality of space into fourth-dimensional reality of time. Contrary to popular belief, it is time rather than gravity that keeps everything in the universe in order. Time is the mathematics of the universal laws of nature, the unifying force that holds everything together. The Mayans knew this, basing the Mayan calendar on the universal mathematics of the fourth dimension.

The frequency of time is the 13:20 ratio on which the Mayan calendar is based. Humanity is now in the process of changing the old 12:60 (twelve months in a year, 60 minutes in an hour) timing frequency to the timing of natural law, thus taking us out of time as we know it and into fourth dimensional awareness. When we have accomplished this transformation, we will enter a new path of spiritual and mental evolution in tune with the cycles of the universe.

Some call this “Heaven on Earth.”

Gregg Braden refers to our planet’s point of maximum energy and no magnetic field as “Zero Point.” “To an observer, the world at Zero Point appears to be very still, while the participant experiences a quantum restructuring of the very boundaries that define the experience. Earth and our bodies are preparing for the Zero Point experience of change, collectively known by the ancients as The Shift of the Ages. The Shift represents a rare opportunity for collectively repatterning the expression of human consciousness.”

Here is a channeling from Archangel Gabriel on the Harmonic Convergence of 2012 ...

Dear Ones,

As you look at the heavenly beauty of the rose, you are uplifted in your mind. Love flows through you and your eyes moisten as your heart is softened. In this way you have lifted your personal vibration to a higher plane of appreciation and wonder for the beauty of life.

At this time, you are being asked to bring that same energy of love and wonder into your life to recognize the time known as the Harmonic Convergence. Marking the dates of a powerful planetary configuration that occurred August 16 and 17,1987 is very empowering. At that time a shift began in the energetic forces affecting the earth’s vibration. Everything on earth was touched and is still being shifted by a continuing increase in energy.

Let your mind be filled with the wonder of the changes that have occurred in the past 25 years. The sheer magnitude is unprecedented. What is even more amazing is that these changes were prophesied by many ancient peoples. They all agree that this shift in the earth’s vibration can bring forth a new time of Harmony and Peace on the earth after the year 2012.

The birth of new life is messy and often fraught with turmoil as the old ways must shift and change. All that attaches to past is broken loose, old structures are crumbling, and resistance to change causes great pain. As you look back over the years since 1987, notice that there are countries that no longer exist such as the USSR. The walls between peoples like East and West Germany have crumbled. There is an instant communication system called the internet that now unites the entire world. These events were the dramatic beginning to an increase in energy frequency beyond that experienced on earth before. The Harmonic Convergence marked the beginning of a powerful influx of Light Energy intending evolution for the earth and all her inhabitants. All that does not align with this energy will not be able to exist in the new frequencies flooding the earth creating a new foundation for all life.

Humanity is being given a choice. Some have said, “evolve or die,” and in some ways this is truth as it has been throughout the ages. What is also true is that human beings are being given a choice as to how they evolve in the consciousness that permeates the earth. Choose well in this short time before 2012. Focus on calamity and fear as the changes confront you, and you are immersed in suffering as your vibration matches that energy. Prepare yourself in the worldly sense in the ways you need to, but most importantly, prepare your mind and your being to receive this influx of Light. This energy carries the power of miracles and can create Harmony on earth and in your life. Working together, all of humanity can live in peace to sustain life and the beauty of Nature in a new way.

Let yourself receive the powerful gifts being offered to you to bring Grace and Harmony into your life. As you change and evolve, everyone on earth is transformed. Gather in groups August 16 and 17 to celebrate the days this shift began in 1987 and honor the truth and power of this time. You hold the key for evolution of the Earth and all of humanity. More people believe that Peace on Earth is possible than believe in mass destruction. Focus on what you believe, allow hope and conviction to enter your heart and pour this energy into your prayers for a miraculous shift in consciousness for all peoples on the earth. Use the agreement that millions of people share to empower the energy of Harmony and Peace between all beings.

People will be gathering for prayer and visualization of the evolution of Harmony on earth. Find a group or create one so all can join together in the Light of Freedom and the Grace of God bringing Peace and new life for the age birthing in 2012. It is up to you to receive the gift of Light being offered and ground it into the earth for the harmonious change to occur. This Grace is unprecedented, and legions of angels stand ready to assist you. It is here for you because you are loved and you are an important key to bringing the miraculous evolutionary shift into being so that all life on earth may recognize their Unity and live in joyous Oneness with God.

And so it is !

Oneness : Everything is Connected !

' Separation is an illusion ... Oneness is the deepest truth of existence ... '

Here is an excerpt from Gregg Braden's 'The Divine Matrix' where Gregg shares his understanding of Oneness, the connectedness of all things.

One of the Greatest Mysteries Of All Time by Gregg Braden

Are We Connected—Really Connected? Ultimately, we may discover that our ability to understand the "rules" of The Divine Matrix holds the key to our deepest healing, our greatest joy, and our survival as a species.

Modern science is hot on the trail of solving one of the greatest mysteries of all time. You may not hear about it in the evening news. You probably will not see it on the front page of USA Today or the Wall Street Journal. Yet, nearly 70 years of research in an area of science known as the "new physics" is pointing to a conclusion that we cannot escape.

The Discovery - Everything in our world is connected to everything else. That’s it. Really! That’s the news that changes everything, and which is absolutely shaking the foundations of science, as we know it today. “OK,” you say. “We’ve heard this before. What makes this conclusion so different? What does it really mean to be so connected?” These are very good questions, and the answers may surprise you.

The difference between the new discoveries and what we previously believed is that in the past we were simply told that the connection exists. The new experiments, however, take us one step further. In addition to proving that we are connected to everything, research now proves that the connection exists because of us—specifically because of our consciousness.

Our connectedness gives us the power to stack the deck in our favor when it comes to the way our lives play out. In everything from searching for romance and healing our loved ones, to the fulfillment of our deepest aspirations and the peace of our world, we are an integral part of all that we experience each day. That the discoveries show we can use our connection consciously opens the door to nothing less than our opportunity to tap the same power that drives the entire universe.

Through the connection that lives inside of you, me, and every human that walks the earth we have a direct line to the same force that creates everything from atoms and stars to the DNA of life!

Shift in Perception - There is one small catch, however. Our power to do so is dormant until we awaken it. The key to awakening such an awesome power is that we have to make a small shift in the way we see ourselves in the world. With a little shift in perception we can tap the most powerful force in the universe to address even seemingly impossible situations of life. It happens when we allow ourselves a new way of seeing our role in the universe. The “small shift” that we need is to see ourselves as part of the world rather than separate from the world. The way to convince ourselves that we are truly part of everything that we see and experience is to understand how we are connected, and what that connection means.

Tap the Force - To tap the force of the universe itself, we must see ourselves as part of the world rather than separate from the world. Through the connection that joins all things, the “stuff” that the universe is made of—waves and particles of energy—appears to do things that break the laws of time and space as we once knew them through conventional physics today. From the DNA of our bodies, to the atoms of everything else, things in nature appear to share information faster than Albert Einstein predicted anything could ever travel—faster than the speed of light.

New Physics - In laboratory experiments, particles have been documented to be in two places at the same time, to be connected even though they are separated by distances of many miles, to “heal” themselves and even travel in time! Historically, such phenomena were believed impossible. But apparently they are not only possible, they also may be showing us something more than the interesting anomalies of small particles. The freedom of movement that the quantum particles demonstrate may reveal how the rest of the universe works when we look beyond what we know of physics.

While these results may sound like the script of a futuristic Star Trek episode, they are being observed now, under the scrutiny of present-day scientists. Individually, the experiments that produce such effects are certainly interesting and deserve more investigation. Considered together, however, they also suggest that we may not be as limited by the laws of physics as we believe. Maybe things can travel faster than the speed of light, and maybe they can be in two places at once! And if things can, what about us?

Power of Imagination - These are precisely the possibilities that excite today’s innovators and stir our own imaginations. It is the coupling of the imagination—the idea of something that could be possible—with an emotion that gives life to a possibility, so it becomes a reality. Manifestation all begins with the willingness to make room in our beliefs for something that does not exist. We create that “something” through the power of consciousness and awareness.

The poet William Blake recognized the power of imagination as the essence of our existence, rather than something that we simply experience occasionally in our spare time. “Man is all imagination,” he said, clarifying, “The eternal body of man is the imagination that is God himself.”

Philosopher and poet John Mackenzie further described our relationship with the imagination, suggesting, “The distinction between what is real and what is imaginary is not one that can be finely maintained…all existing things are…imaginary.” In both of these descriptions, the concrete events of life must first be envisioned as possibilities before they can become a reality.

Space-Time - For the imaginary ideas of one moment in time to become the reality of another there must, however, be something that links them together. Somehow in the fabric of the universe there must be a connection between past imaginings and present and future realities. Einstein firmly believed that the past and the future are somehow intimately entwined as the stuff of the fourth dimension, a reality that he called space-time. “The distinction between past, present, and future” he said, “is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”

Intelligent Field of Energy - So, in ways that we are only beginning to understand, we find that we are connected not only with everything that we see in our lives today, but also with everything that has ever been and with things that haven’t happened yet. And what we are experiencing now is the outcome of events that have occurred, at least in part, in a realm of the universe that we can’t even see.

The implications of these relationships are huge. In a world where an intelligent field of energy connects everything from global peace to personal healing, what may have sounded like fantasy and miracles in the past suddenly becomes possible in our lives.

With these connections in mind, we must begin to think of the way we relate to life, our families, and even our casual acquaintances from a powerful new perspective. Good, bad, right, or wrong, everything from the lightest of the light and most beautiful life experiences to the most horrible occasions of human suffering can no longer be written off as chance happenings. Clearly, the key to healing, peace, abundance, and the creation of experiences, careers, and relationships that bring us joy is to understand just how deeply we are connected to everything in our reality.

A Spiritual Pandemic : Time To Evolve

A great spiritual transformation is surging through with the waves of unprecedented change humanity is experiencing in these times of accelerated evolution, nudging us forward towards making a shift in our own consciousness, to change our world view from individuation to that of Oneness ... A Spiritual Pandemic is underway as described by the 'Star Elders' through Aluna Joy in the following letter to humanity ...

Pandemic ! What a great and powerful word to awaken humanity to the fact that the collective is now thinking globally and acting locally. It is remarkable that something as simple as the fear of a little germ can link together the people of Earth. Humanity has taken another step toward being a global community. There is no doubt now that you have anchored within your consciousness the reality that you are all connected, interdependent and recognize the importance of being self-responsible. This is not a time to fear.. It is a time to celebrate.

Your collective experience and explorations living in the third dimension have come full circle. This is a time where you will begin to rethink and renegotiate everything. Much of what you knew to be true you will discover is out of date. Realities that you dreamed about you will soon discover is the new reality you are now entering. These current times are causing a spiritual pandemic. This means that the boundaries between physical realities, cultures, religions, dimensions, social statuses and educational levels have been compromised and are breaking down. This spiritual pandemic means the entire world is waking up.

Humanity is moving toward unity and oneness with all living beings of Earth. This spiritual pandemic will naturally evolve all life into a global community. Our actions will be a grand orchestrated collaboration focused on the well being of all living things. You can see symptoms of this transformation in every direction of your reality. This is the completion of ancient prophecy that you wrote about a long time ago.

The pandemics in your Earth's environment, your economic systems, your political systems, your consciousness, your physical realities and even your immune systems are morphing right before your eyes. You are now having a full on experience of what we like to call the Earth's stimulus package. You share the same planet . . . you breathe the same air . . . you even share the same viruses and bacteria! This is not new. You were never separate from each other. You just forgot you were always connected to all that lives..

The Earth's shifting environment is stimulating you to change the way you interact with Earth, the solar system, and the universe. This is showing up as the acceleration of using green technologies . . . including using solar power to recycling. Many of you are getting closer and in touch with Earth once again. Your gardens are sprouting in your environment, but also your internal gardens are flourishing.

Your shifting global economic system is impelling you to move toward one that is based on service and sharing. You will see a huge shift in values. You are evolving from a self-centered "What is in it for Me?" mentality, into a reality that you act from the knowing that you are a part of a global community. You recognize that everything you do affects every other living thing.

These times are compelling you to trust spirit over your physical and monetary assets. You were never meant to trust that which is outside of yourself. Your true nature is knowing that you are a 100%, self-contained, creative being with all the tools needed to live abundantly. It was never your destiny to toil to make a living. There is freedom right out in front of you.

Your physical body is morphing so quickly to the arrival of the new energy that you have to let go and let it be. This is causing you a lot of strange physical symptoms. The shifts are coming without delay and it takes your breath away. Even your immune system is evolving quickly so as to be able to adapt to the evolving energy of all life on the planet. Every single living thing in your environment is changing on a molecular level. From your body, to the earth, trees and plants, minerals, even viruses and bacteria are all evolving together to stay in harmony. This is not something to be feared. It is something to be excited about. Remember your body is an amazing self-healing vehicle. You constantly underestimate its regenerative power and forget it is evolving with everything else on this Earth. Disease is not why you drop your body to move on; it is just your human excuse. You leave this world when you have completed your mission and that is it. Let us remind you that you are not done yet!

Your consciousness is expanding to accept the utter vastness of magical and powerful new realities. You are beginning to live within these realities. You are enjoying the challenges and wholeheartedly except the huge void of unqualified energy out in front of you. It is an exciting, fascinating and highly creative time for you. It can also be a confusing time as you let go of the old and bring in the new all at the same time. Remember you are not going crazy . . . you are just waking up! This is something to celebrate. You are beginning to realize that the only way your life flows in these days is to be truly authentic to yourself and true to your heart. Many of you will be asked to make bold moves in your life. Others will stay more behind-the-scenes fine-tuning everything around them. You all are working toward the same goal . . . if you know it or not.

Do not let fear rob you of this incredible moment. This is why you came to Earth at this time. You are experiencing a huge evolutionary leap of the soul. Only the brave and courageous could be here at this time. You may not feel brave today, but we assure you, you are incredibly brave to take on and assist with the Earth's final step into oneness with the solar system and our multi-dimensional universe.

Do not let fear of global health issues, political unrest, economic challenges, war and terrorism stop you from being the truth of who you are. Your old, outdated, human nature naturally wants to cast blame on others for what is going on in your world today. This is not a conspiracy or diabolical plan by members of an elite group who we think are in power. This is propaganda that puts you in fear. Know that everything that is happening on this planet is happening because you allowed it to be so. It is a time to take full responsibility for the reality we have manifested in this dimension. Each living being will experience this evolution based on their own belief system. Ask yourself "What do you believe today?" All the issues your world is facing right now are just part of the Earth's stimulus package to help you stimulate your evolution . . . and it is working.

Evolution is a messy process. It always has been and always will be. Change and evolution is about tearing down the old and creating the new. Nature does this every moment. We do not know why humanity forgot that you are a part of this. But you did, and this is why you struggle and suffer sometimes during evolutionary pulses like the one you are in today. The cycles have come full circle and you are ready for the quantum leap to a new reality.

Remember that the best defense to the challenges of these times is to have a good offense. Your offense is acting from the authenticity of who you are. You may know this as your inner light, awareness, consciousness, etc…, but the fact is that there are only two choices you can make: You can choose fear, which is a lie and not who you are. Or you can choose LOVE, which is the truth of who you are, and you can keep on keeping on with the evolution. Fear will stop your evolution in its tracks. Love will not only accelerate your path, but it will make it an exciting adventure for you.. Be positive, fearless and bold. Love is the unifier of all life and a protector of anything that you conceive could cause you harm. You are safe . . . you always have been.

Quit pretending your cool and calm on the outside, when on the inside you feel like you are going crazy. Let your support groups around you know what you are going through. We assure you that they are feeling the same things. It is insane to execute this evolving by yourself. There is a great sanity gained when our extended families come together in support of each other. It is another step toward global community and living in non-judgment. Remember there is an insidious, un-spoken rule that to be spiritual we must honey-coat the things we do not like. Honey-coating any part of the experience of this world is just a way to avoid the blessings and gifts of evolution of the current issue. When we avoid different aspects of our experience, we are also judging the greater divine plan that was set into motion by the Creator and our collective consciousness.

When you experience a peaceful moment, drink it in and enjoy every second of it. Do not worry that you are feeling stuck or not evolving. This is merely a rest stop so you can recharge and prepare for another leap into the next reality. Rest is good. Enjoy its rare and welcomed appearance of quiet and calmness.

There are many that will not like this message. They will criticize it and fight against it. These are the ones who teach us compassion. These are the ones that we must love and support . . . because you have been in their shoes more than once or twice yourself.
We realize that what we are asking you to do is a huge step of faith. We are asking you to take a leap into a void where you cannot see its destination. We are invite encourage you to put your fear addictions behind you, and to begin to act from the love and truth that you already know in your heart. If you do this, the path will unfold in front of you with each step you take, and you will be traveling in good company!

We are always here with you.
